Discovery-Network -- NEWSLETTER: News Updates from the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

About Discovery-Network
English

We would like to invite you to participate in the Discovery Network, a daily update on human rights and democratic development of the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (IHRHL). Discovery network is about a process in which democracy becomes so broadly and profoundly legitimate among Nigerian citizens, that it is unlikely to break down. Nigeria's past was dark and dirty. Without a reasonably clean separation from the previous authoritarian past, it will be impossible for the new byproduct to become broadly and profoundly legitimate. Discovery network shall investigate and bring wrongdoing to the fore. Liquidation of the authoritarian past is of the utmost importance.

Discovery shall leave no stone unturned in bringing about the right of the people to freely to determine their own destiny which is democracy proper. Discovery shall not do this alone. It will share its findings and news with those outside Nigeria and other friends of democracy that helped in no small measure to bring democracy about in Nigeria. The time is ripe for democrats throughout the world to share news and information to develop democracy. We need such cooperation in Nigeria more than ever, because the mere thought that our dark military past shall recur is most frightening. You need to get involved directly. It is our wish to make Discovery the best of its kind.

Our seed is Article 21 (1) and (2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

(1) Everyone has the right to take part in the government of his country, directly or through freely chosen representatives.

(2) The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and genuine elections which shall be by universal and equal suffrage and shall be held by secret vote or by equivalent free voting procedures.

This is the language of democracy. Democracy is a right. Get involved directly. Your suggestions shall be most motivating. Morning comes.
