Welcome,To the new African Rivers Network listserver, it is hosted by Kabissa a service provider for the Africa Region. The African Rivers Network was formed at the Second International Meeting of Dam Affected People and their Allies, Rasi Salai, Thailand, 28 November-4 December 2003 The network has been working since then and met recently for the 2 nd meeting in Nairobi, Kenya from the 2 to 4 of October 2005 where the network formalised its approach by developing a vision and mission statement. AFRICAN RIVER’S NETWORK. African Rivers Network (ARN) is a network that brings together African countries advocating for sustainable utilization of African water resources. Vision A people centered development in Africa where; § Decision making on water and energy development, practices alternatives to large dams § Human rights and community acceptance of decisions are the cornerstone, as well as reparations of outstanding social injustices. § Ecological sustainability is the legacy for the future generations. Mission § Work towards ecological sustainability and social justice in the arena of large dams and their alternatives through, influencing decision making, amplifying community voices and rights, and build capacity. The meeting also asked the National Association of Profesional Environmentalists (NAPE) to host the network for the next three years. The new steering committee is: 1. Dr. Idris Muslim - Dam Affected: Nigeria 7. Mr. Hope Ogbeide - West Africa 8. Mr. Bryan Ashe - Coordination Communication 9. Mr. Sena Alouka - Coordination Communication 10. Le Réseau Africains des Rivières a été créée lors de la Deuxième Réunion Internationale des Personnes affectées par les Barrages et leurs alliés ténue du 28 Novembre au 4 Décembre 2003 à Rasi Salai, Thaïlande Le réseau fonctionne bien depuis et au cours de sa deuxième Réunion tenue à Nairobi, du 2 au 4 Octobre 2005, son approche a été formalisée grâce à l’élaboration de sa vision et sa mission. RESEAU AFRICAIN DES RIVIERES Le Réseau Africain des Rivières (RAN) est un réseau rassemblant les pays africains travaillant en faveur d’une utilisation durable des ressources en eau. Vision Un développement axé sur les populations dans lequel : § La prise de décision sur l’eau et l’énergie privilégie les alternatives aux grands barrages § L’acceptation des communautés et le respect des droits de l’homme tout comme les réparations des injustices importantes constituent la base § La durabilité écologique doit être passée aux générations futures. Mission § Œuvrer vers une durabilité écologique et une justice sociale dans le domaine des grands barrages en intensifiant les droits et voix des communautés tout en renforçant leurs capacités. La Réunion a également demandé a l’Association Nationale des Professionnels de l’Environnement (NAPE) de coordonner les activités du réseau pour les trois prochaines années.
