Senegal: Former Chad President Faces Arrest

A warrant of arrest has been issued, for Chad?s former President, Hissene Habre for alleged atrocities committed during his eight year rule. The indictment was issued under Belgium?s "universal jurisdiction" law which allows prosecution of atrocities regardless of where they are committed. The governments of Senegal and Chad have both indicated their support for Habre?s extradition. Habre is in exile in Senegal. If extradited, Habre would become the first ex-President ever extradited to face human rights charges in another country?s courts.

UN Relief Efforts for displaced Zimbabweans

The UN has launched a Zimbabwe aid appeal plan to raise 30 million US dollars for the people displaced by Operation Restore Order. The money will be used to shelter Zimbabweans still homeless after the government?s highly criticised demolitions of houses built without permission.

Somaliland: Vote Rigging Mars election

Voting has been marred by allegations of ballot fraud. The Somaliland Electoral Commission accused some candidates of printing fake ballot papers in a bid to rig their way to victory. The commission has said any candidate caught cheating will be disqualified. The elections are seen as an attempt by Somaliland to gain international recognition as an autonomous state from mainland Somalia.
