Rights group urges probe of Ugandan army and rebel atrocities
Beginning in East Africa: The international criminal court has been urged to investigate rights abuses by both the Ugandan army and the Lord Resistance Army rebel movement. Human Rights Watch accused both the army and rebels of atrocities in Northern Uganda. The rights body charged that the two sides continue to kill, rape and torture civilians with impunity. The ICC came to Uganda at the request of President Yoweri Museveni. To date the 19 year old civil war has displaced more than 1.9 million people.

Nigeria?s intervention in troubled spots costs US$15bn
Crossing into West Africa: Nigeria's intervention in conflicts in West Africa over the past 10 years has cost the country about 15 billion US dollars. Speaking on humanitarian operations in Nigeria on Tuesday, Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said the country?s involvement in the conflicts had serious financial implications on his country. Under the umbrella body of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Nigeria championed the crushing of the rebel movement in Sierra Leone and also helped fund the peace in Liberia.

Moving South where: A South African man is to become the first HIV positive person to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Paddy Nhlapo, who has lived with the virus for 14 years aims for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Carnival Affair as Gambia continues winning streak
And with sport: Gambia?s winning streak continues at the FIFA Under-17 World Championships in Peru. On Tuesday Gambian fans displayed a fabulous, colourful carnival as their heroes beat Qatar 3:1. The result leaves them on the brink of qualification for the quarter-final stages.
Gambia takes on the Netherlands in their final group match on Friday.
