President Sekou Toure of Guinea states that, "The women, constitute the base of society. If today, all the men in Guinea, all the men in Africa, and all the men in the world, were to disappear, then the Guinean and African society and mankind would however continue to live, because there would still be women carrying in them germs that would come to replace all the men who had disappeared. But let all the women of Guinea, all the women in Africa and all the women in the world disappear, and at most, in a century, the whole of mankind would disappear! This is a first reality."

The African Women's Charity Organization is a part of the African Independence Movement and the oppression of women is one of the biggest obstacles to this movement. We know that it is of utmost importance for us to have a very frank discussion on "The Oppression of Women (Sexual Abuse, Promiscuity, HIV/AIDS, Polygamy) and its Negative impact on the African Independence Movement.
HIV/AIDS is rising faster among African women than any other sector of society. For those of us who love Africa and African people, it is a topic that must be confronted without sentimentality. A manifestation of the oppression of women is the fact that oftentimes women are powerless inside their relationships to the point that they feel that they cannot say "no" to sex with their partners even if they know that their partners are being promiscuous.
Another important factor that is not being discussed enough is the fact that a lot of men are what is called on the down low (men having secret sexual relations with other men outside of the relationship with his woman). In addition many women are practicing unsafe sex not wanting to believe that the men that they are with are having sex with other people.
We must have an on-going discussion and education about this very important subject matter in order to confront the problem of the oppression of women.
