Building African Women's & Youth Movements and Forming International Sisterhood
Newsletter***** November 2004
Trip to Zimbabwe - Much thanks and appreciation out to ZANU PF Women' s League for the warm African hospitality and gratitude while in Zimbabwe Oct. 17- 24th 2004. We were able to give the $2,120 collected from our project "Pennies for Zimbabwe" as a contribution towards independence and self-sufficiency. We also gave school and medical supplies to the Mbuye Nehanda school. Mbuye Nehanda is a school, a home for orphans, and a farm.
We would like to commend ASA school (Academy and Community Science Center) , under the leadership of Tovi Scruggs and Sharon Parker for their contribution to the "Pennies for Zimbabwe" project and for adopting the Mbuye Nehanda school in Zimbabwe. We think that this is a shinning example of love and unification with our people in Africa.
We also made a contributions to the Batania Early Childhood Education Center and Guieshe Secondary School in the Glendale district of Zimbabwe. We would like to thank Chem Chimutengwende for his assistance in the Glendale district.
We thank everyone for your donations and ask you continue to collect the pennies because we are continuing with the "Pennies for Zimbabwe" project. Our goal is $10,000.
These "pennies" will go to help the women of Zimbabwe towards self-sufficiency by contributing tools and seeds for farming. We choose pennies so that everyone who wants to make a contribution can, though we definitely accept all contributions (not restricted to pennies).
Report on recent African Student Unification Conference - Mills College October 9, 2004
Students participated from BSU San Francisco State University, BSU Cal State Stanislaus, African Black Coalition, University of California, BSU College of Alameda, Afrikan Student Union, San Diego State University, Silicon Valley College, San Jose State University, Mills College, and Laney College of Oakland, CA.
We call on all the students to organize a student conference on your campus just like this one. The process of organizing these conferences is more important than the conference itself. The process should include an on-going discussion of these critical questions, 1) How do we build a Youth movement? 2) As students, what is our responsibility to our community and Africa? 3) Why is organization necessary? 4) Why is women's leadership so important to building a Youth movement? 5) Why is it important for us to see ourselves as Africans? As we are struggling over these questions we must organize African Student Conferences everywhere with the intent of everyone joining an organization that is working for the people. One of the first questions that we must ask people when we meet them is:" what organization are you in?"
Upcoming !
African Youth Conference Saturday March 12, 2005 Duquesne University 600 Forbes Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15282 10am-5pm. Free
We call on all the African youth organizations, all the youth organizations of the churches, all the organizations who primarily work with youth, all youth in general, and all youth who want to make a serious contribution to the unification of African youth worldwide to attend this conference.
We are in the process of building powerful African Women's and Youth Movements that will connect all African women and youth, inside and outside of Africa. This is a very important part of the African independence movement. African Women's and Youth Movements are necessary in order to educate, mobilize, and organize the largest number of African women and youth as possible. This will be our eleventh conference.
As before we need your help for the success of this conference. Volunteering allows us to keep the conferences free of charge and allows everyone to participate that wants to. We need volunteers for: set-up, clean up, registration tables, preparation of food (dishes), distribution of and/or reproduction of flyers. We also need your help to contact and invite youth and student organizations in the Pittsburgh area as well as the entire East Coast.
This conference is also honoring International Women's Day/Month.
The response for Africa as part of the Youth Movement has been awesome!
We have received interest from all over Africa to attend this Youth conference, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Cameroon, Zambia, Togo, Kenya, Guinea, Ghana, Ethiopia, Congo - Brazzaville, Swaziland, Niger, Rwanda, South Africa, as well as outside of Africa, England, France, and Tajikistan. Unfortunately, we know that all of these organizations will not be able to attend because of the difficulty from the US Embassies as well as the cost of travel to attend. We suggest as a way to develop the Youth movement that these organizations do conferences themselves.
Conferences Everywhere -The African Women's Charity Organization continues the call to organize African Women's and Youth Conferences everywhere. "Organizers kits" are available for you or your organization if you would like to organize a women's/youth conference in your area.
Other Work by the African Women's Charity Organization
Some work that we've done have been ten conferences throughout the US starting March 2000 and working directly with over 500 organizations. We have traveled to Africa five times representing our projects. "Peace for Rwanda" We collected and sent medical supplies. "Pennies for Angola" $540 and school supplies in 1999. "Support for Eritrea" We collected and took school and medical supplies & $500 in 2001. "Pennies for Angola" collected and delivered $3,640 in 2002. "Pennies for Zimbabwe" We've conducted workshops and seminars and have participated in numerous speaking engagements and interviews.
Books Donation - We are happy to announce that we were able to donate 148 relevant books to McClymonds High School in West Oakland, California.
Clothes Donation - We are also happy to announce that we were able to donate clothes to the young women at Ansari House (House of Helpers) a young women's (teen home) located in Richmond, CA.
Membership
First we'd like to thank all of our old members because it is your $20 yearly membership that has allowed us to maintain our day-to-day activities. We are in the process of building powerful African Women and Youth Movements that will connect all African women and youth inside of Africa and outside of Africa. This is a very important part of the African independence movement. African Women's and Youth movements are necessary to educate, mobilize, and organize the largest number of African women and youth as possible. Our vision includes obtaining our own collective schools, childcare, housing, kitchens, transportation, and employment. We must build a strong infrastructure in Africa and we must be tightly organized outside of Africa.
Your $20 membership fee will take us one step closer to building these awesome African Women and Youth Movements. Thank you for your contributions.
Your contributions to the African Women's Charity Organization are tax deductible.
We are looking forward and intensifying our efforts toward unity, independence and self-sufficiency in 2005!
