The objective for this consultative meeting, among others, is to: i. Update stakeholders on the WSIS process leading to the Tunis Summit, 16-18th November 2005. ii. Sensitize the public on the proposed national ICT implementation framework. iii. Launch the national portal. Your views and comments as a stakeholder in the ICT sector shall be the basis of our contribution to the deliberations leading to the WSIS Summit in Tunis 16-18 November 2005 as well as a way forward post WSIS. This will be done in form of audiotapes, video documentaries, and promotional items such as posters, leaflets, brochures, etc. WOUGNET appreciates members' contributions to the overall enhancement of the WOUGNET mission and would like to exhibit some of the materials that promote members' objectives. Members' promotional materials will be showcased at the WSIS summit. This is an opportunity for WOUGNET and its members to be promoted at national and international level. WOUGNET will also participate in the Hivos "Expression under Repression" seminar and training to be held on 17-18 November 2005. In addition, Dorothy Okello, WOUGNET Coordinator, will be the moderator for the WSIS Gender Caucus panel: "WSIS Implementation: Gender Caucus past, present and post Tunis" on Thursday 17 November 2005 from 09.00 - 11.00 h. The panel will aim to build on lessons learned and achievements gained in the implementation of the WSIS Gender Caucus 'bridging the digital divide project, within the WSIS information society by looking at and presenting past, present and post Tunis plans and activities. The panel will also address post-WSIS implementation challenges from structural issues contained in the WSIS documents, to real impediments at national levels to programmatic issues linked to global policy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PROJECT NEWS AND EVENTS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ = I-Network Private Sector Node Debate: The Uganda Internet Exchange Point The I-Network Private Sector Node (PSN) will have its first activity focusing on the Uganda Internet exchange Point (UIXP). As you may already be aware the UIXP has been around for sometime now and we would now like to review its presence. A multi-stakeholder discussion panel will be hosted at Speke Hotel on November 10, 2005 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. The key speaker on the UIXP will be Mr. Badru Ntege, One2Net who is very knowledgeable on this subject and was also one of the first people involved in the implementation of the UIXP. Most Internet Service Providers are linked to the UIXP and are already benefiting from its presence. An initiative to register ICT experts in various desciplines will also initiate its collection of data at this event. This initiative is aimed at building a database of ICT experts who will eventually contribute to setting standards in especially the various private sector companies. The computers are largely Pentium III, 450Mhz -1.4Ghz processor, 4-20 Gb hard disk with 128 Mb RAM. Each machine is a full system - boxed and securely packaged complete with its own colour SVGA monitor, keyboard, mouse and cables. The computers are donated in the UK for use in NGOs, schools, community organisations and other not-for-profit organisations. They are priced at 100 Pounds sterling each and come with a one year warranty, ensuring technical support for the beneficiaries. The content moderators and translators will work on a six-month e-discussion: "Strengthening rural women's networks with regards to information and communication, and to combat HIV/AIDS in rural areas". The discussion is organized by Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) and supported by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP EU (CTA) and in collaboration with ENDA Pronat, Senegal, and the Pacific Islands Energy Gender Network. The objectives of the electronic discussion, which will be conducted in English and French, are: - To strengthen input for the World Congress of Rural Women to be held in South Africa. - To share information on fundraising for the networks and to increase networks pro-activity in making funding requests as well as to improve capacities to monitor and spend donor funds. - To facilitate cooperation between the networks, in particular with regard to information and communication strategies. The content moderators are expected to establish at an early stage an atmosphere of openness and high quality contributions in order to bring about the discussion's success. Content moderators are expected to introduce new topics and questions, facilitate and stimulate the discussions, and produce weekly summaries as well as reports on each of the discussion themes. The translators are expected to establish a conducive environment by making discussion papers and weekly summaries available in both English and French. The content moderator and translator positions are contract positions for a time period, January-June 2006. We expect that the moderators and translators will each work about 3 months in total during the electronic discussion period. The moderators and translators are expected to have ready access to their email and be comfortable working in an online environment.
