= WSIS Online Forum: Paving the Way to Tunis, July 11 - 29, 2005
In July 2005, WOUGNET hosted an online forum on key issues for the World Summit
on the Information Society (WSIS) to share views, experiences, knowledge and
concerns. In particular, the forum focused on ICT policy priorities for Uganda
as well as the two outstanding issues for the WSIS - internet governance and

= ICANN, Internet governance and Africa
During the last few years the relationship of African stakeholders with the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has received
greater attention. Driven by a few key individuals within African governments,
the technical community, and civil society organisations, the increased
scrutiny has highlighted the importance of Internet governance issues for
Africa. Internet governance has also been put on the public agenda in the
context of the WSIS. The Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and
Southern Africa (CIPESA) has produced a public briefing on the current status
and key points of the debate. Titled "ICANN, Internet governance and Africa",

= Call for promotional items from WOUGNET members
In preparation for the upcoming WSIS summit to he held 16-18 November 2005 in
Tunis, Tunisia, Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) is organizing to showcase its
activities since inception in May 2000. This will be done in form of audiotapes,
video documentaries, and promotional items such as posters,
leaflets, brochures, etc.
WOUGNET appreciates members' contributions to the overall enhancement of the
WOUGNET mission and would like to exhibit some of the materials that promote
members' objectives.
Members' promotional materials will be showcased at the WSIS summit. This is an
opportunity for WOUGNET and its members to be promoted at national and
international level.
If you would like to have your material included in the WOUGNET stall, you are
kindly requested to submit these items at the WOUGNET office not later than
28th October 2005.

= Participate in the WOUGNET WSIS Posters Competition!!
During the upcoming WSIS summit to be held in Tunisia, 16 - 18 November 2005,
Women of Uganda Network (WOUGNET) will have a stall displaying its activities
and achievements since inception.
WOUGNET plans to display work done by its members and partners in support of use
of ICTs through audio tapes, video documentaries and promotional materials such
as posters, leaflets, brochures, etc.
WOUGNET is therefore calling upon all those interested to submit posters in a
mini-competition. The best poster portraying the theme "Women and ICTs in
development" will be selected and given a cash prize.

Guidelines for posters design:
1.      Posters should portray the theme "Women and ICTs in development".
2.      They should be appealing and ICT relevant.
3.      They should have an ICT developmental message.

Awards:
The best poster will be displayed at the WOUGNET stall in Tunis. This is an
opportunity for WOUGNET, its members and partners to showcase their
achievements and what they are doing.
In addition, cash prizes will be awarded for the best three posters. The winner
will get a cash prize of Shs 200,000, the runner up a cash prize of Shs 150,000
and the second runner up a cash prize of Shs 100,000.

The deadline for submission of posters is 28th October 2005. For more

PROJECT NEWS AND EVENTS

= Africa Source II, Kampala, Uganda, January 8 - 15, 2006
Africa Source II will seek to foster the growth of FOSS expertise amongst
technical support professionals working in Africa and facilitate knowledge
sharing and exchange around successful implementation of FOSS. Africa Source II
will bring together nearly 100 technology support professionals, trainers and
consultants working with the non-profit sector from across Africa. The
participants will all have a history of working with service and advocacy NGOs,
educational organisations, NGO resource centres, community centres and health
information organisations.

The aim of the event - which will be held in Kalangala - is to facilitate
learning and exchange between these communities, in particular around the
practical deployment of Free and Open Source Technologies. The intention is to
move beyond conceptual discussions of the benefits of FOSS and technology in
general, and to test out these ideas and focus on practical skill sharing
between technology implementers in the region.

The deadline for applications to participate in the event is October 20, 2005.

= The Stockholm Challenge 2006
The Stockholm Challenge welcomes ICT based projects from all over the world to
enter the award and compete for the Challenge trophies. The Prize giving
ceremony will take place in the Stockholm City Hall May 11th, 2006 and all
finalists will be invited to participate in the event.

The Stockholm Challenge <http://www.stockholmchallenge.se/> is a very successful
international networking program for ICT entrepreneurs for almost ten years. It
continues to be a leader in demonstrating how information technology can
improve living conditions and increase economic growth. One of the main
features of the Stockholm Challenge is the ICT prize, the Stockholm Challenge
Award, which has attracted over 3,000 projects over the years.

The Challenge focuses on projects and programmes where ICT plays a significant
role in the achievement of the objectives. It is open to any projects or
programmes that qualify in any of the categories. The categories are; Public
Administration, Culture, Health, Education, Economic Development and
Environment. Entries are invited until 31st December 2005.

All participating projects must:
Illustrate how ICT is used to create new or better traditional services and/or
products, which are beneficial for human and social development.
All competing projects must be up and running. They should be implemented or
piloted for no less than three months. The Stockholm Challenge Award does not
accept draft concepts or ideas only.
The jury will only evaluate and compare projects that can show measurable
outcomes and impact. Be verifiable, i.e., able to present credible references.
Be free from religious, political or other personal beliefs.
All applications must be in English

= New shipment of computers from Computer Aid International

WOUGNET, in partnership with Computer Aid International, is pleased to announce
the arrival of the second shipment of fully refurbishes quality Pentium
computers.

The computers are largely Pentium III, 450Mhz -1.4Ghz processor, 4-20 Gb hard
disk with 128 Mb RAM. Each machine is a full system - boxed and securely
packaged complete with its own colour SVGA monitor, keyboard, mouse and cables.

The computers are donated in the UK for use in NGOs, schools, community
organisations and other not-for-profit organisations. They are priced at 100
Pounds sterling each and come with a one year warranty, ensuring technical
support for the beneficiaries.
