1. WSIS GENDER CAUCUS

Integrating Gender perspectives into the WSIS:
The formation group of the WSIS-Gender Caucus invites you to join
the twenty-two organisations that began work in Bamako to ensure that
preparations for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
and the outcomes of the Summit include a gender perspective. The
formation group of the gender caucus consists of representatives of
organisations that responded to an invitation by UNIFEM to begin this
work in the African Regional Preparatory Meeting - Bamako 2002, May
25-30, 2002.

= Comité d'Assistance à la Femme Nécessiteuse de Cameroun
Créée le 20 fevrier 2002, le Comité d'Assistance à la Femme
Nécessiteuse de Cameroun oeuvre pour l'amélioration des conditions de
vie des femmes nécessiteuses, des filles déscolarisées et des
prostituées de Cameroun. Elle les à se prendre en charge en
organisant des seminaires, des réunions et des programmes de
formation et assure le suivi et l'encadrement des femmes afin
qu'elles puissent participer au développement.

= Femme De Demain (FDD)
Femme De Demain (FDD) est une organisation de développement pour la
promotion de la femme. Elle prône le Développement Humain Durable par
l'autopromotion à la base. Elle est convaincue que c'est l'Homme qui
doit être au début, au centre et à la fin de toute action de
développement.

= Mukono Multi-purpose Youth Organisation (MUMYO)
Mukono Multi-purpose Youth Organisation is a non-profit grassroot
organisation founded in 1992 to promote the rights and well being
of the young men and women in Uganda through education, training,
advocacy and information sharing for for self-reliance.

= Tanzania Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO)
Tanzania Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (TANGO) is the
largest and longest standing national umbrella organization serving
the Tanzanian NGO community. TANGO was founded in 1988 by 22 founding
NGOs. It now has over 400 member organizations. As an umbrella body
it is committed to promoting the well being of its constituency by
acting as a unifying organ and mandated representative in advocating
for transformation for the common good.

= Youthful Initiatives for Economic, Environmental, Educational &
   Large - scale Development (YIELD)
Based in Nigeria, the Youthful Initiatives for Economic,
Environmental, Educational & Large - scale Development (YIELD) is a

OneWorld Africa is part of the OneWorld online network committed to
harnessing the democratic potential of the internet for human rights
and sustainable development. OneWorld Africa is committed to
utilising the internet and other ICTs to bring the voices of African
people to a global audience and make visible their contributions to
sustainable development and human rights promotion and protection.
OWA does this through its various editorial products, Oneworld Africa

= Africa Pulse
Africa Pulse is an information portal for the Civil Society sector in
the Southern African Development Community. Organisations throughout
the region can publish content directly to the site, whether it be
news of the arrest of a journalist in Zambia, the HIV/Aids crisis in
South Africa, a profile of an organisation's work in Tanzania, the
devastation caused by a flood in Mozambique, an analysis of the war
against Unita, or an election update from Harare. Organisations,
academics, journalists, researchers, activists and unions are free to
publish any material on the portal that is relevant to the Civil
Society sector and to the region.

= OneWorld Radio AIDS Network
OneWorld Radio AIDS Network is a community of broadcasters, NGOs and
activists coming together inthe fight against AIDS. The site includes
a large database of audio for listening online and global exchange as
well as news, training materials, funding information and other
practical resources for national and community broadcasters, health
educators and campaigners as well as people working in AIDS/HIV
organizations, aid agencies and development NGOs.

= WSIS Gender Caucus at Bamako 2002
In May 2002, the WSIS African regional preparatory conference was
held in Bamako, Mali. Copies of the following documents prepared by
the WSIS gender caucus at the Africa conference are available online:
(1) Mainstreaming Gender Into the WSIS; (2) WSIS Gender Caucus
Statement; (3) Key Recommendations of the WSIS Gender Caucus; (4)

= Online Conference: Information Access for Rural Women, June 3-21.
In June 2002, WOUGNET hosted an online conference on Information
Access for Rural Women. The objective of the conference was to
facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences on information
access for rural women. Currently available from the conference
webpage are: (1) weekly summaries of the conference proceedings, (2)
a resources page with links to documents and websites compiled by
conference organizers or contributed by conference participants, (3)
a conference organizers page with links to their various

= University of California-Berkeley African Studies Center: East
Africa Art Exhibition
Now available is a preview of selected original artworks exhibiting
Fall 2002 at the African Studies Department, University of California
at Berkeley. Accompanying each image, participating artists explain
and interpret visual elements within their work relating to impacts,
changes, and developments for women, both personal and societal, in
East Africa and beyond. Over a dozen new original artworks were
created specifically for this event by such artists as Lilian
Nabulime (Uganda), Yvonne Muinde (Kenya), David Kibuuka (Uganda), and
Stella Atai (Uganda).

= East African Gender Budget Sub Regional Conference, June 17-21
Forum for Women in democracy (FOWODE) with the assistance from UNDP
is organising a gender budget sub regional conference. The rationale
for this conference is to share countries experiences of gender
budget initiatives in the eastern sub region of Africa and further
advocate for gender equity in budgets. This conference is the last
activity of our grassroots women leaders project. Other  activities
done under this project include gender budget training workshop,
gender advocacy training workshop and the gender budget advocacy
campaign workshop.

= Announcing The APC Africa Hafkin Communications Prize in 2002
The 2002 theme for the APC Africa Hafkin Communications Prize is
"People-Centred Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
Policy in Africa". The prize is open to civil society organisations,
government institutions, educational organisations, community-based
groups, networks, social movements and individuals anywhere in
Africa. APC Africa is looking for ICT *policy*  initiatives that: (1)
are people-centred and mobilise participation, (2) raise awareness
and build capacity, (3) are Africa-driven and that develop Africa,
(4) have positive community impact at community level. The prize of
USD$7,500.00 will be shared amongst up to three winning initiatives.
The deadline for nominations is September 15, 2002.
