Ms. Nogi Imoukhuede
Project Co-ordinator
Women's Rights Watch Nigeria
NIGERIA
Dear Ms. Imoukhuede:
I have followed with interest, pain, and nervousness recent developments in
Nigeria that affect women's lives, particularly the Edo State Widowhood Bill
and the Safiyu Tudu's case in Sokoto State. I am encouraged by the former
and greatly disturbed by the latter. On my behalf and on behalf of Women in
Africa and the African Diaspora (WAAD) and the Association of African Women
Scholars (AAWS), I applaud you and your organization for your energetic and
sustained intervention in these and other matters affecting women in Nigeria.
I have initiated a conversation for an international mobilization in support
of the Edo State Bill and in vehement opposition to the Safiyu Tudu case.
One way we can channel our support or opposition is through well-crafted
petitions addressed to specific individuals and/or constituencies that are
in a position to influence the course of events. Please send me the e-mail
addresses, snail-mail addresses, phone and fax numbers to which we can
send petitions regarding the two issues raised above. As soon as I receive
this information from you, I will prepare bilingual (English and French)
petitions to be disseminated worldwide. Sokoto State and Edo State will
hear from us!
Again, many thanks for the work you do. You have my full support.
In sisterhood,
Obioma Nnaemeka
