Our Organisation,the Centre for Development,
Constitutionalism and Peace Advocacy has been
following the on going discussions on women's
economic rights with keen interest. We join other
participants in congratulating you, the Organisers
for an innovative and well focused conference. Keep it up.
As an Organisation, our position on the
issue of marginalisation of the Nigerian women is that Nigerian women would
remain marginalised expect the issue of women's education,
especially
the girl child education is given equal priority attention as the economic empowerment of
Nigerian women. We believe that an educationally empowered woman is an
economically empowered woman too. Why? This is the age of intellectual
empowerment. One can do little without education. As an
Organisation, one of our projects is granting interest free micro- credit
facility to women. But we consider it not enough. Therefore, we
counsel beneficiaries, especially the younger ones to think of improving
themselves educationally.
So, we will soon start a computer program
for a selected few who are interested. They will be taught basic
English Language too inorder to improve their reading and writing abilities.
Access to education should be a priority for the Nigerian women today,
especially the younger ones and the girls. There is no doubt
that education frees a person or a people from
poverty, ignorance, diseases and suppression. The older and/or better
established NGOs and other Civil Society Groups in Nigeria should embrace
the education of women in concrete terms. A well packaged
neighbourhood or community based adult education
project will not fail.
As the conference goes on we shall make more contributions.
