CONTROL OF ECONOMIC RESOURCES BY MEN In my view, economic resources are those resources which have been given monetary value by the society. With this definition, it is apparent that what constitutes ECONOMIC RESOURCE varies and changes with the times and from one society to another. In Nigeria ,like in most parts of the world today, these resources are controlled by men who also dictate what constitutes a resource and what does not. The bulk of Nigerian women are employed in the informal sector like petty trading and housekeepers . No indices exist to measure the contribution of this group to the economy and as a result, such contributions remain largely unrecognized. Further ,the vital contribution of women in the domestic sector is also de-monetarised. It is neither measured nor recognized. It is my view that if contribution in these areas are defined and delineated, and monetary value given to them it may then not be correct to assert that economic resources are controlled by men. The salient questions are 1.what constitutes an ECONOMIC RESOURCE and who defines same? 2.what are the indices by which value is accorded and who prescribes these indices? Perhaps if these questions are addressed and real justice actualized, it may temper the present urge to always trail several steps behind The Man in an area in which he is better equipped physiologically. The resultant LACUNAE in our area of natural advantage weakens rather than empowers The Woman.
