The use of the Internet is relatively new in Nigeria and we have not fully understood or utilized its benefits due to our problems of weak infrastructures. Out of a total population of about 120 million it is estimated that only about 1 million have access to the internet mainly through patronising cybercafes. We are happy that we have succeeded in drawing participants from all over the world. Countries represented so far are Nigeria, the United States of America, Canada, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Argentina, switzerland, Zambia and Kenya. We hope that we all will benefit from your diverse experiences through your active participation during the conference. Women's Rights Watch Nigeria believes in citizens participation in monitoring our emerging democracy. Coming from our traumatic past under oppressive military dictatorships, we say NEVER AGAIN must citizens watch passively while the Nation is plundered. We believe that power belongs to the people and it is our duty to advocate, monitor and defend the rights of Nigerian women who remain marginalized and oppressed using the internet as an advocacy tool. We will like to pay tribute to the following organisations for believing in us, and supporting us in achieving our objectives. - World Bank Country Office Nigeria - Kabissa space for change in Africa - Elle communications Nigeria Limited - Prestnet Nigeria Limited We would like to have the names and addresses of all participants for our records, so please submit them to us if you have not done so already. GOAL: The overall goal of this conference is to help inspire new ideas and partnerships. We will work towards this goal by: - Establishing a vitual community of individuals from around the world who share a common interest in promoting the economic empowerment of Nigerian women. - Connecting all participants from around the World using the internet as an advocacy tool. - Providing a forum for the network to share resources, stories, questions and practices. - Sythesizing the conference discussion and collectively highlighting innovations, best practices policy options and areas in need of further research and training. Pariticpants are expected not only to participate in the discussions but also to provide feed back to the moderators. The Conference Secretariat, Women's Rights Watch Nigeria will moderate the conference by monitoring and moderating the discussions. We will monitor the e- mails sent to the list prior to their posting to ensure the e-mails are appropriate. . We wish you all successful delibrations. J.J.
