Professor and Chair
With an overall mandate to promote the welfare of the
people of Pakistan
and other developing countries, Aga Khan University (AKU) occupies a unique
position in the academic world. Based on the principles of quality,
relevance, impact and access, the University is chartered to operate
programmes and campuses globally. It now has teaching sites in eight
countries, principally in Pakistan
, East Africa and the UK
.
The Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS) of AKU Medical
College is the premier
public health academic unit in the country. The department has adopted a
leadership model in community oriented public health and social development,
recognised regionally and internationally for the relevance, quality and
extent of its work.
The vision of the Chancellor set the direction for
the University to take a lead in community development and the creation of an
innovative curriculum that emphasises a balance of tertiary care with
population health. CHS strives for excellence in public health research,
education and services for developing national and international leadership
to address community's health needs and to strengthen health systems in partnership
with the communities, government, non-government organisations and academic
institution nationally and internationally.
The Department currently has a faculty of 38
professionals and a programme staff of over 170. CHS works in three major
modalities: education, service and research through its six operational
units: Health Systems, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Environment and
Occupational Health, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Reproductive Health and
Gender, and Community Health.
Besides contributing to the MBBS undergraduate
programme, CHS offers MSc Epidemiology and Biostatistics; MSc Health Policy
Management; MSc Clinical Research; a variety of short courses under the
Continuing Education Programme; Community Medicine Residency; and a Research
Officer Training Programme. A PhD programme with emphasis on Public Health
will be initiated in 2009. The research and development programme of CHS
currently has grant support of approximately US$ 10 million.
AKU invites applications are for the position of Professor and Chair,
Community Health Sciences.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Dean, Medical
College , the Chair
will be responsible to provide support and leadership to all
divisions/programmes for initiating and managing education, research and
development activities at undergraduate, graduate and continuing education
levels. S/he will p romote independent and collaborative teaching and
research initiatives in public health and its component disciplines, within
and between the divisions/programmes of the department and with other
academic units at AKU as well as with external institutions and government
agencies, where applicable. The Chair will provide an academic environment
conducive to the scholarly advancement of faculty and students, and will
support the department in generating funds for research and development
initiatives.
Requirements
- EITHER a physician with
certification in a specialty directly related to public health (eg,
community medicine, public health medicine, preventive medicine), OR a
person with a professional doctorate in public health (DrPH), OR a
PhD/DSc in a particular public health discipline (eg, epidemiology) with
additional broader primary public health qualifications (eg, MPH)
- Progressively responsible and
demonstrable published experience reflecting in depth knowledge of
public health programmes. This must include: i) substantive experience
in conducting field studies at an international standard; ii)
demonstrated ability to form effective partnerships (eg. with government
agencies, NGOs, universities, private sector), and iii) a track record
of publications relevant to developing countries in internationally
reputed peer reviewed journals
- Experience of leadership of an
academic unit will be highly desirable
- A track record of generating
grant funding for research and development activities
- Experience of working in a
developing country will be preferred
- Ability to set and achieve
educational, research and development goals in the area of or directly
related to health systems and services at community level, and to plan,
implement and evaluate health service and research programmes
- Ability to manage financial,
material information and human resources
