Sign Petition To Include HIV/AIDS Organization to the Civil Society Representative to the Permanent General Assembly of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of African Union (ECOSOCC)

The Economic, Social and Cultural Council of African Union (ECOSOCC), has just concluded its election to the permanent General Assembly without any Civil Society organization working  in the Area of HIV/AIDS elected in this all important advisory body of the African Union .
The election was concluded in Nairobi, Kenya on the 18th April 2008,
Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) and Manufacturer?s Association of Nigeria (MAN) were elected to represent Nigeria in the ECOSOCC General Assembly.

The African Union, in its determination to build a union that is people-driven, decided in Maputo in 2003, to create ECOSOCC to complete that objective.

ECOSOCC therefore seeks to ensure the participation of a well- organized, autonomous, transparent and accountable civil society organizations at a continental level to advice African heads of States on cross cutting issues of HIV/AIDS and other developmental agenda.
Unfortunately, at the conclusion of the election in Nairobi, no civil society organization working in the area of HIV/AIDS was elected into the body, making HIV/AIDS a non issue despite the devastation the epidemic is causing in Africa.
Although, I stood as a lone voice that CSO working in the areas of HIV/AIDS and reproductive health be given special consideration; the democratic process of the election implies that two representations from CSO be elected into ECOSOCC from every AU member state.
While, this vision of African Union is applauded, Organizations working in the area of HIV/AIDS may not have the opportunity to present its advice and frameworks to the heads of states during general Assemblies for the next four years.

ECOSOCC executive has a four year term mandate within which they are expected to contribute to building democratic AU by mainstreaming people?s participation, act as a broker between Africa?s civil society organization and the AU. Act as change agent for development and provide policy advice and advocacy in the accomplishment of the AU Vision.

I therefore request organization working on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health to submit a petition seeking the special inclusion of organization working in these two areas to be included as ECOSOCC special Executives.

Your petition should be directed to  cido@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  and copy  to ecosocc@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx before 30th April 2008.
