Dear Tola,
I want to give you the present situation report on the issue which you and your
listserve members had taken up on my behalf so beautifully that it has resulted
in a positive experience for the South African High
Commission in Lagos and me.I thank all you beautiful people all over the world
who commented on the issue and not only give suggestions but also volunteered
their services. I do appreciate you all. You have all reinforced my belief that
we are all the same and that there is just one truth and justice in us. You
have also made me to believe in our one humanity. I am really touched.
I met Mr. Tawe and one of his officials on Friday 9th November 2007.I went with
my Lawyer in case there is going to be fireworks but how wrong I was, I was
treated in a very humane way and made to realise there is no need for the
Lawyer to sit in on the discussion between the embassy and I. We had fruitful
discussions where I was made to see the problems facing the
Embassy ( I was made to realise the big part played by my countrymen in the
debacle that is getting Visa from the Embassy.I was educated about the
conniviance of Nigerian staff and some Nigerians in other to beat the
Embassy in the Visa game and how the High Commission tackled this problem)
As Mr. Tawe explained to me, they cannot import all their staff from South
Africa but they are trying to sanitise things.I also gave them my insight
concerning this matter and gave suggestions which I hope if taken will reduce
the constricting process of getting Visa and refunds of Deposits in the
embassy. After the discussions,we were able to get to the bottom of the
late repayment of the refund which was really unnecessary. The issue was
resolved with the payment of my refund and this was done in less than an hour
with all the paperwork completed.I left with my deposit of One Hundred and Ten
Thousand Naira that same Friday.
The speed of at which my case was treated suggests that the refund process
could be hastened up for others with similar cases.Though Mr Tawe and I agreed
about the need for due process and the fact that there can never be a permanent
visa policy, yet we both agreed that there is still room for improvement. It is
evident that the High Commission is trying hard to
combat certain sharp practices from Staff and applicants which could be curbed
if applications are made online.
Once more, I want to thank all those that contributed and created a sense of
urgency which resulted in my being able to collect the deposit. It will be
worthy to note that I enjoyed the hospitality of the South African High
Commission . I hope they keep it up by extending the same gesture to my fellow
Nigerians.
I pray you will give this a wide circulation like you gave my complaints.
Thank you.
Regards,
Bunmi Adedina (Mrs.)
