Dear Colleagues,

I wonder what it means to be a Nigerian these days. I wonder what we mean when
we say “Nigeria, my country, the giant of Africa”. Where are our Leaders, when
we, Nigerians are put to such ridicule?. How can an embassy ask for a deposit
(as guarantee that you will return to your country?).

What do international laws say about this?. Too many questions, but I think
this should be taken up with our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and indeed the
President of Nigeria. Our citizens are our assets.

Our government should protect us. For now, the government MUST pay a lawyer to
take up this case. May-be ask the membership of the African democracy forum to
contribute to this cause. I stand to be counted!.

It is indeed a hassle and sad, but I think we should ask ourselves why these
kind of measures are applied and how we can firstly address the courses.

I am a South African and most of us know why turn around fees are required
particularly from certain countries. We have experienced a lot of challenges
from conference attendees who obtain visas for their own purposes and never
return home causing problems and defeating the purposes of these events.

Let us try to work on changing the behaviour of our fellow brothers and sisters
and that will make it easy to challenge rules that are causing boundaries
within the continent.

I hope your problem is resolved soon, if there is anything we can do to assist
let know.

Regards

Hi Tola Olujuwon,

I am sorry for the frustration the South African High Commission is trying not
to refund your reparation fee you paid before going to S.Africa.

Well it was not the case with me when I also travelled to South Africa, for the
Africa Symposium on
Negotiation and Conflict Resolution in Cape Town Dec. 2005 - Jan. 2006, though
they never requested that for my own case.

To enable you recover your money, I suggest that you investigate and get the
mobile and phone numbers (home/work) of the High Commissioner in SOUTH AFRICA
High Commission - Lagos and send to our listery then we shall be calling he/she
world wide for the refund of your money.. I believe it will solve the problem.
This is a serious human rights abuse that my organisation “;Association for the
Protection of Women's and Children's Rights in Cameroon (APWCR) stand against.

Best Wishes
